Garland, Texas - Town residents wanted to understand the definitions of words and phrases (i.e. "secure property") included in the "Envision Garland" Agenda 21 plan. This is Don Knapp, Senior Communications Officer at ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability USA.

We are a completely transparent organization, and I want to take a moment to address some of the big misconceptions here about ICLEI. We are NOT a United Nations organization. Period. We are an independent nonprofit association of local governments from every state in the U.S. and 68 countries worldwide. We were founded by local governments themselves, not the U.N.
Our members, in cities and counties big and small, rural and urban, share a commitment to climate protection, clean energy solutions, and sustainability. ICLEI strives to help its members meet their unique, self-defined goals. The idea that we push mandates on local governments is patently false. They decide what's right for their own communities, and use our tools and resources to help them.
Sustainability is not a concept invented by the U.N., nor is it a secret agenda. It is mainstream and American. Walmart, if you haven't noticed, is one of America's corporate leaders in sustainability, because being more sustainable (e.g., reducing energy use) helps it save money and reduce its environmental impact.
The same is true for local governments. A city that "wants to become more sustainable" wants to conserve natural resources while at the same time creating jobs and economic growth, and save taxpayer dollars through energy initiatives. The end-goal: to create thriving, healthy communities not only for ourselves, but for our children and grandchildren. Nothing radical about that. Don Knapp, Oakland, CA, 5/6/2010 10:50AM
