Referenda-Proof Redevelopment: How San Francisco is Evading Challenges to the Bayview-Hunters Point

Zumbrun, 12/4/2006 – San Francisco policy-makers have stonewalled an entire community’s effort to have a say in what the Redevelopment Agency does to their neighborhood based on an alleged “procedural” defect in the referendum petition process. Although the petition had included a complete copy of the text of the proposed ordinance, it had failed to include the full text of no less than ten separate documents which had been incorporated by reference into the ordinance during the drafting phase. Unless this opinion is challenged, all citizens’ fundamental right of referenda in California will be in jeopardy.

He said, "….current lifestyles and consumption patterns of the affluent middle class, involving high meat intake, use of fossil fuels, appliances, home and work air conditioning, and suburban housing are not sustainable."
